Ayutthaya Historical Site Conservation Project

Ayutthaya Historical Site Conservation Project

Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya is not only the ‘birthplace’ province of Bank of Ayudhya, but also Thailand’s vital city steeped in extensive historical importance and priceless culturally rich heritage. Thanks to its unique value worth conservation, a number of archeological sites in the Ayutthaya Historical Park has been designated by the Fine Arts Department as important national archeological sites in 1935. Later in 1991, the Ayutthaya Historical Park was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the inscription of the ‘Historic City of Ayutthaya and associated historic towns’, at the 15th session of the World Heritage Committee held in Carthage, Tunisia. The declaration was carried out in accordance with the cultural world heritage criteria, affirming evidence of existing or lost culture or civilization.

In light of this, Krungsri continues to recognize the importance of cultural and historical treasure preservation. Since 2005, the Bank has organized a wide variety of activities, including landscape improvements and conservation of historical sites, so that future generations can take pride in the nation’s history. Krungsri’s other contributions include donations for conservation of ancient archaeological sites, supporting the Fine Arts Department to provide virtual labels for archeological sites, and supporting the Fine Arts Department in conservation and outdoor exhibition of 190 archaeological artifacts at the Chao Sam Phraya National Museum, Ayutthaya.

In 2015, Krungsri in cooperation with the 3rd Regional Office of Fine Arts Department, Ayutthaya, initiated the ‘Ayutthaya Historical Site Conservation Project’ with an aim for conservation of archeological sites in Ayutthaya. Under this project, Krungsri brought volunteers to take part in cultural preservation through temple restoration and landscape improvement activities, by cleaning and removing weeds that could cause damage to the historical sites.

The Ayutthaya Historical Site Conservation Project has not only achieved the above-stated objective, but also aligned with the UN Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
