Question 1 What is 3-D Secure (Verified by Visa/ MasterCard SecureCode)?
Answer

An online payment authentication method being co-developed by Visa International Service Association (named "Verified by Visa" service) and MasterCard International Incorporated (called "MasterCard SecureCode" service) that requires the participation of the card issuer, the card acquirer, the merchant and the cardholder. The password-based cardholder authentication services aim to alleviate consumers' security concerns which cause the lack of confidence in shopping online and merchants' worries about disputed transactions and charge backs for card-not-present transactions.

Question 2 How does 3-D Secure work?
Answer
  1. Cardholder goes to Issuer's enrolment web page and provides card details, other identification information specified by the Issuer and any required shared secret, such as a password or Personal Assurance Message.
  2. Issuer validates cardholder information and notifies the cardholder of successful completion of the enrolment process.


  3. Payment for online purchase:
    1. At any participating merchant site (notice the logos of Verified by VISA/ MasterCard SecureCode), once the cardholder clicks "Check Out" to make an online payment for the order placed and provides credit card information on the bank page, a 3-D Secure screen (either Verified by Visa or MasterCard SecureCode) will automatically appear.
    2. The cardholder looks for his/ her "Personal Message" to confirm that the cardholder is shopping at a legitimate merchant.
    3. The cardholder then correctly enters the password previously registered with the card issuing bank's site and clicks the Submit button. Once verified by the card issuer, the purchase process proceeds. The result of card authorization will then be shown to the cardholder.

Question 3 What are the benefits of 3-D Secure to online merchants?
Answer

- Reduce their exposure to fraud and disputes "I did not do it", resulting in lower dispute resolution costs.
- Gain customers' confidence and trust in shopping at the merchants' site.

Question 4 If online merchants wish to employ the cardholder authentication services, what do they need to do? and is there any costs?
Answer

All online merchants registered Krungsri e-Payment service with Bank of Ayudhya PCL. are entitled to implement the 3-D Secure technology with no extra software or costs, plus the bank will do it all for them. That is, when there is a payment made by a cardholder with 3-D Secure password, the password screen request will automatically be shown to the cardholder without any of the merchants' action.

Answer

- Gain more confidence when shopping over the Internet.
- Prevent unauthorized use of card on the Internet.
- Be able to use the service from any PC at any participating merchant's
Web site without having to download any plug-ins.

Question 6 How does a cardholder sign up for 3-D Secure (Verified by Visa/ MasterCard SecureCode)?
Answer

Needless to apply for a new credit card, the cardholder simply visits his/her card issuing bank's Web site to register for 3-D Secure service with free of charge. Apply for Verified by Visa (VbV) service for Visa cardholders and MasterCard SecureCode (MsC) service for MasterCard cardholders. For any problems concerning Verified by Visa/ MasterCard SecureCode, cardholders should directly contact their card issuer.

Question 7 How would a cardholder know which card issuers have 3-D Secure services in place?
Answer

Most of card issuing banks in Thailand have implemented the service already. The lists are as follows:

UOB : www.uob.co.th
For cards issued in foreign countries, the cardholders must contact his/ her card issuing bank for the service enrolment.

Question 8 How can a cardholder register for Verified by Visa/ MasterCard SecureCode?
Answer
    Just complete the quick steps as follows:
    1. Enters the issuer's Web site and click to enroll for Verified by Visa/ MasterCard SecureCode
    2. Read and accept the terms of service agreement before starting registration process.
    3. Fill in the 16 digit credit card number and other card information required to verify his/ her identity.
    4. Specify the cardholder own Password and Personal Message.
    5. Create password question and answer to be used in case of forgetting password.

Question 9 How to make an online payment with Verified by Visa/ MasterCard SecureCode?
Answer

After the cardholder submitted his/her credit card information at any participating merchant's Web site (Notice Verified by Visa/ MasterCard SecureCode logo), an online authentication screen of the card issuer will be showed immediately to the cardholder to verify his/her Personal Assurance Message (Visa) or Greeting Message (MasterCard) and enter his/her Verified by Visa Password or MasterCard SecureCode Password. Once the correct password was sent to the bank, the transaction will successfully be completed.
